Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
~ 1 John 2:15-16
We have a tendency to focus on temporary things that are not important in the grand scheme. It is extremely easy to get caught up with social media, what we look like, what other people think, our bank account, getting the car, getting the house and the list goes on. We start focusing on things that can be gone in an instant! Houses, reputations, looks, money can be gone in one tragic accident.
He brought me forth also into a broad place;
He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
~ Psalm 18:19
How often do you look in the mirror and delight in yourself? How often do you see what you have done and been delighted? I am going to guess it is not that often, and definitely not as often as God delights in you. He knows every little detail about you and delights in every single thing.
Psalm 126:6 “He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.”
You may be weeping and going through a difficult time right now, but God is using you right now. You are still playing a part in the advancement in the Kingdom. You need to realize that you are not useless. You are enough, even though you may feel like you have nothing and are not doing anything, but God sees you as useful. He sees that you can play a role in this season. You have a bag of seeds to sow.
Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4 (NIV)
Sometimes when I read this I can get happy thinking that my desires of a certain job, goal, house, body or life will be met or reflect on why I am not getting what I want, they may seem like good goals but frustrated that I do not see them as a possibility any time soon. It may make you think that God is like a genie that is you worship HIm first He will grant you any wish. This verse is going deeper than we may choose to read it sometimes. This verse actually makes you re-evaluate what you want, and why you want it? Is it to advance His kingdom or to advance your agenda?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
~ Matthew 6:25-34
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
I know for most of us still vividly remember big tragedies in our life, and it brings up questions. We may know and feel God's reckless love, but those tragedies are still burned in our hearts. We know they are not His perfect will, but He still allowed it to happen. It does not always make sense. How could 9/11 and the Twin Towers crumbling be good? Children seeing the destruction on repeat on every channel to be the last thing they saw every night. Watching people trapped and panic, people dropping out of the buildings. The dust cloud that rested and continued to diminish air quality noticeable for months. Rescue workers dying at the scene and getting debilitating diseases afterwards as a result of the smoke and destruction. How could families getting destroyed be good? How can death, disease and severe injuries? It does not seem to add up.
