Humility

It’s no surprise that as Christians we have a different view of the world than other people. And one thing that God has been really putting on my heart is humility. Humility according to dictionary.com states “modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank” or humble “having a feeling of insignificance, inferiority, subservience.” Jesus is known for His humility yet He did not deny or belittle the power and authority He had and His purpose to save the world. He was the greatest healer, greatest friend and greatest everything! He is and was perfect He did not try to say He was not important and that He didn’t know everything. His humility was about serving others. It is His character of humility he helps the needy and the poor.

Biblical humility is about serving. It is not about belittling yourself or the power you have from God. This kind of humility is grounded in the character of God, one example is seen in Psalm 113:4-9 when the Father stoops down to help the poor and needy. Another scripture on humility that has been speaking to me is Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV):
"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!"

This to me shows the servant heart that God wants for us and to keep us focused outward instead of our sinful fleshy tendency to look inward. He wants are thoughts to be focused more on others. Jesus was a servant and did not care about status and His personal needs He was concerned about others. I have listed some bible quotes to show some examples of God’s view of humility:
  • Psalms 25:9 He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.
  • 2 Chronicles 12:12 And when he humbled himself the wrath of the LORD turned from him, so as not to make a complete destruction. Moreover, conditions were good in Judah.
  • 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
  • Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
As you let this view God has on humility reflect on how to serve others and continually repent from your inward, sinful focus (Or maybe it is just me that needs to keep repenting). I am sure some of you know this quote I love from CS Lewis “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”  He understands that it is about being a servant not belittling the power that lives in you and the great light you have to shine and share to the world to give it hope and life.God does not want you to think negatively about yourself. God loves you He did not create a mistake and knows that you are perfect. “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17) He celebrates you and me. You are His perfect child, you do not need to deny your royalty. He wants you to be secure in your identity and relationship with Him, that you naturally do not care about your status in the world and are able to focus on others. He does not want to lower you, He wants to raise you up, He is the lifter of your head (Psalm 3:3) and He wants you to have a heart for serving the world.
