“I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but I will not be mastered by anything. - Corinthians 6:12 (NIV)
First, let us thank God for our incredible freedom! We can do anything. Truly anything, we have free will. We are not puppets chained to anything we have freedom. Although, not everything is recommended, since it can leave us vulnerability to becoming a slave. We are called to break chains from what is keeping us down, and hindering us from living our lives to the fullest and being the best person we can be. When making changes we need to realize that as individuals we are powerless to break through. We may think that we can just avoid it and if we try hard enough, we can stop. Realistically, putting the work on ourselves we lead us to failure. It may seem like it’s something we “should” be able to do, but when our hearts in the wrong place we cannot break free. Trust me I have tried and tried, with no lasting results. One approach that I tried to no avail was completely shunning something or forbidding it in my life. I was still giving that thing too much power in my life. We want to be in a place spiritually that we love God so much that we do not want anything to separate us from our Father. Jesus’ blood was shed for us out of love for us. He wants us to be free.
I want you to take time and reflect on what is controlling you. Your master could be anything. It could be a job, a status, a spouse, a child, an appearance, money, food, and alcohol. The root for each one of our desires is something inside of us that only God can fulfill. These things may provide a partially or temporarily fix, but God can really heal you. His unfailing, unconditional love is the only thing that can free you from fear and need for love. You can be free from your fear of not fitting in or being accepting because you have eternal acceptance. That true love and acceptance will set you free and because you get it you have everything and because He loves us, you can love yourself.
When it comes down to it we are all broken, that’s why Jesus came to rescue us! God knows how to change us and can break everyone free from any master. Remember Jesus saying, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”(Matthew 19:26) We need God to change us form the inside out.
