I have been really enjoying this song by Bryan & Katie Torwalt, especially after hearing them on the Jesus Culture podcast and hearing them talk about how they are in the middle and have not seen the fullness of God’s promises at this moment, but the confidence that they can still praise Him before they are at the end. I even liked them talking about them not having a full album to release it is 5 songs that are speaking to their hearts right now and feel y the Holy Spirit are meant for people to hear now instead of waiting until it is “complete.
:The Bible is full of wisdom and best practices to live our life. The past weeks we went over 7 healthy practices and I wanted to make a nice page for you as a reference. These healthy practices have been backed by science and more importantly God’s true, unfailing Word. The list below has links to the blog posts with more bible verses, information and some scientific findings. The unusual, biblical health practices we discussed were:
Jesus was focused on serving other people. He was living a life focused on other people. He wanted His disciples to have the same servant mindset. God’s Word is full of word encouraging us to serve one another, but did you know that serving others can be healthy for you?
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord Your God gives you.” (Exodus 20:12)
This is one of the only ten commandments that talks about the benefits of following it. The only other commandment that mentions a positive benefit is ““You shall not make for yourself an idol…. [God will show] lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Exodus 20:4-6) Another commandment only discusses the consequences of not obeying, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,” discusses only the negative outcome saying, “for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.” It is interesting that this one comes with the benefit. Probably because in God's wisdom He knew this would be hard . God also repeated this multiple times throughout the Bible to drive home His point:
Sabbath is a day set apart from everyday. Getting you out of the endless cycle of wanting more, endless things to do and always being in a hurry. Sabbath is about taking time to reflect on our yourselves, reflecting on God’s amazing love and power. Being thankful that we are here for eternity and do not need to rush because our Father will take care of it. Sabbath should help promote a more balanced lifestyle taking time to decompress.
Our healthy practice for this week is fasting. Fasting has been becoming popular with people since it shows results, without having to say no to their favorite meal or snack forever.
Before I go further, fasting is not for everyone, and always consult a doctor especially for a longer fast or if you have any pre-existing conditions. Additionally, anyone with and eating disorder may not want to do this practice. Eating may be a tougher discipline. The reason behind your fast is important and at Gracious Health the reason should not be able appearance or losing weight it is focused on God and getting closer to Him. For some people, even without a true eating disorder may not want to fast and really look at your motives. You may even decide to end a fast earlier than planned if your focus is not on God (You may want to check out this audio https://practicingtheway.org/teaching/relationship-to-food).
Fasting has been around for thousands of years! It is a willing abstinence from food for a period of time. Fasting is still counter-cultural, even with the increased interest in intermittent fasting. Our reasons for fasting as Christians should be God with a bonus of a health benefit. He wants His people to be healthy, and the practices He asks of His people aid in their health and life.
When you start thinking about your healthy life, it is easy to get hung up on diets and what to eat, which is exactly why I am writing this series of blog posts. I want you to be able to think about your healthy life being consistent with growing spiritually. You luckily do not need to juggle nine lives, just one awesome cohesive one. This week are diving into prayer this week as we continue to discuss habits that help you live a healthy life. We will look at what some research articles have found along with God’s Words as we look at prayer.
